That being said, I am a Southerner, so I will watch every game. But I'm also a geek, so I also feel like doing a little research. Which team has the best historical pedigree? I don't know yet. We'll find out together by the end of the article!

- Sewanee was also a charter member of the SEC in 1932 but left in 1940. After the turn of the century, they were pretty lousy at sports. In the 8 years they were in the SEC, they never won a game. Perhaps they were too interested in silly trifles like "academics" to worry overmuch about football. However, in 1899 they had arguably the best football season in history. They won all 12 of their games, 11 by shutout. 5 of those shutouts came in a 6-day period while on a 2500 mile train trip. They weren't playing little no-name teams, either. They faced off against Georgia, GA Tech, Tennessee, Southwestern Presbyterian, Texas, Texas A & M, Tulane, LSU, Ole Miss, Cumberland, Auburn (the only team that scored against them), and North Carolina. They outscored their opponents 322-10.
Yep, these fine turtleneck-wearing specimens of manhood. |
